Lakshmi: Understanding the Goddess of Wealth and Fortune

🔥

64 Sacred Havan Yatra — a year-long pilgrimage across six countries. We’re looking for volunteers.

Origins and Legends

Lakshmi, the radiant goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity, emerges from ancient Vedic hymns and later Purāṇic narratives. According to the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean), she rose on a lotus blossom, clutching a pot of gold, embodying the reward of diligent effort and divine grace. In the Vedas, she is praised as Śrī, the embodiment of auspiciousness, and later texts connect her directly to Vishnu, the preserver, as his eternal consort.

Iconography and Symbolism

Artists depict Lakshmi with four arms, each representing a key human goal: Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire) and Moksha (liberation). Her lower hands often hold a lotus, a symbol of purity rising from murky waters, while the upper hands bestow blessings or hold gold coins, indicating material abundance. The lotus also signifies spiritual enlightenment, reminding devotees that true wealth transcends material gain.

Key Attributes

  • Lotus: Purity, spiritual growth
  • Elephants: Royalty, power, and the removal of obstacles
  • Gold Coins: Prosperity and generosity
  • Red Attire: Fertility and auspiciousness

Rituals and Worship

Daily worship of Lakshmi, known as Lakshmi Puja, typically involves a clean altar, fresh flowers, incense and a lighted oil lamp. Devotees recite mantras such as “Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namaha” to invite her presence. Offerings of sweets, especially kaju katli and rice dishes, reflect the belief that sharing food multiplies abundance.

Special rituals occur on Fridays, the day traditionally associated with Lakshmi, and during the month of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu calendar, when devotees fast and meditate on her virtues.

Lakshmi in Festivals

The most widely celebrated Lakshmi event is Diwali, the Festival of Lights. On the third night, households illuminate every corner, believing that Lakshmi walks the earth in search of clean, bright homes. In South India, the festival of Deepavali includes the ritual of Padya Pooja, where rice grains are offered to honor her role as the granter of sustenance.

Another important occasion is Varalakshmi Vratam, observed mainly by married women in South India. The ritual involves drawing a kolam (rangoli) of Lakshmi’s symbols and offering a special set of items called “Varalakshmi” to secure family welfare.

Contemporary Relevance

In modern times, Lakshmi’s image appears on Indian currency, corporate logos and even yoga studios, symbolizing the blend of material success and ethical conduct. Business leaders invoke her blessings before major ventures, while spiritual seekers meditate on her form to align financial goals with dharmic principles.

Her teachings encourage a balanced approach: earn wealth responsibly, share generously, and pursue inner growth. By honoring Lakshmi, practitioners aim to transform prosperity into a tool for societal benefit, rather than mere personal indulgence.
