Who Is Shiva?

Shiva, often called the Destroyer in the Trimurti, balances creation and dissolution within the endless cycle of the universe. Unlike a negative force, his destruction clears the way for new creation, allowing the cosmos to renew itself. Devotees regard him as both a fierce ascetic on Mount Kailash and a compassionate family man with his consort Parvati and sons Ganesha and Kartikeya.

The Symbolism of Shiva’s Iconography

Every element in Shiva’s imagery carries deep philosophical meaning. The trident (trishula) represents the three gunas—sattva, rajas, and tamas—while the damaru drum symbolizes the rhythm of creation and dissolution.

The Linga Purana explains the significance of the lingam, the aniconic representation of Shiva that symbolizes the formless, infinite principle.

Practices Centered on Shiva

Worship of Shiva often involves chanting the sacred syllable “Om Namah Shivaya,” performing abhiṣeka (ritual bathing of the lingam), and observing the month of Mahashivaratri. On this night, devotees fast, stay awake, and offer milk, honey, and bilva leaves to honor Shiva’s benevolent aspect.

Yoga and meditation practices also draw inspiration from Shiva’s ascetic nature. The Shiva Shakti concept teaches that the ultimate goal is the union of individual consciousness (Shiva) with universal consciousness (Shakti), leading to self‑realization.
