Baddha Konasana: How to Open Your Hips Safely

What Is Baddha Konasana?

Baddha Konasana, known in English as the Bound Angle Pose, is a seated hip‑opener that brings the soles of the feet together while the knees drop outward. The word “Baddha” means “bound” and “Konasana” translates to “angle pose,” describing the shape your legs form when the pose is correctly executed.

Key Benefits of the Bound Angle Pose

  • Hip flexibility: Regular practice stretches the adductors, groins, and inner thighs.
  • Improved circulation: The gentle compression of the pelvis promotes blood flow to the reproductive organs.
  • Calm nervous system: The forward‑folding component encourages a parasympathetic response, reducing stress.
  • Postural alignment: Engaging the spine while the hips open helps balance the pelvis and supports better standing posture.

Step‑by‑Step Alignment Guide

1. Set Your Base

Begin seated on a mat with your legs extended in front of you. Fold a blanket or yoga block under your sit bones if you need extra height to keep the spine tall.

2. Bring the Soles Together

Draw the heels toward the pelvis, allowing the knees to fall open to the sides. If the knees do not touch the floor, place a folded blanket under each thigh for support.

3. Lengthen the Spine

Imagine a string pulling the crown of your head upward. Engage the core lightly and draw the shoulder blades toward the back of the ribcage. Avoid hunching.

4. Optional Forward Fold

If flexibility permits, hinge from the hips and lean forward, resting the forearms on the floor or a bolster. Keep the neck relaxed and gaze toward the mat.

5. Breathe Deeply

Inhale to create space in the lower back, exhale to gently deepen the stretch. Stay for 30‑60 seconds, then release slowly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Collapsing the lower back – keep a micro‑engagement of the core.
  • Forcing the knees to the floor – use props rather than strain.
  • Turning the head to the side – maintain a neutral neck to protect the cervical spine.

Modifications for Every Body

For beginners or those with tight hips, sit on a bolster and keep the knees slightly elevated with blocks. Advanced practitioners can deepen the pose by bringing the hands to the feet and gently pressing the elbows into the inner thighs.

Integrating Baddha Konasana Into Your Practice

Place this pose after a warm‑up sequence that includes gentle twists or cat‑cow movements. It works well as a transitional pose between standing postures and seated meditation, allowing the hips to release tension before you settle into stillness.
