The figure of Nataraja, meaning “Lord of the Dance,” emerges from ancient Vedic hymns and later Puranic narratives that portray Shiva as the supreme performer of creation, preservation, and dissolution. Early depictions appear on stone carvings of the 5th‑centth century CE, but the iconic bronze statues most associated with South Indian temples date from the Chola dynasty (9th‑12th centuries). In every image Shiva stands atop a dwarf demon Apasmara, holding a drum in his upper right hand and a flame‑shaped trishula in the lower left, while his other hand is raised in the abhaya (fear‑less) mudra.
