Who Is Varahi?

Varahi is one of the seven mother goddesses known as the Saptamatrikas, each representing a distinct aspect of the divine feminine in Hinduism. She is often depicted with the head of a boar and the body of a woman, embodying both the nurturing and the fierce protective qualities of Shakti.

Mythological Origins

According to the Devi Mahatmya, Varahi was born from the divine energy of the goddess Durga during her battle against the buffalo‑demon Mahishasura. In this narrative, Varahi emerges as a warrior who assists the Great Goddess in subduing chaos, highlighting her role as a guardian of cosmic order.

Connection to the Saptamatrikas

The Saptamatrikas—Brahmani, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, and Chamunda—are collectively invoked in tantric rituals and temple worship. Each Matrika mirrors the power of a major male deity, and Varahi corresponds to the boar‑form of Vishnu, Varaha, symbolizing the earth‑restoring aspect of the divine.

Iconography and Symbolism

Varahi’s iconic boar head represents strength, determination, and the ability to plow through ignorance. She is usually shown holding a kapala (skull cup) in one hand and a club or trident in the other, signifying her mastery over death and her role as a protector of devotees.

During the Navaratri festival, especially on the sixth day (Shashthi), many communities perform special pujas for Varahi. In Karnataka, the annual Varahi Jatra draws thousands of pilgrims who participate in processions, folk dances, and communal feasts.

Notable shrines include the ancient Varahi Temple at Hampi, the Varahi Devi shrine in Mysore, and the revered cave temple at Ujjain. These sites often feature intricate stone carvings that depict Varahi alongside her sister Matrikas, offering a visual narrative of divine unity.
