Who Is Chandra in Hindu Tradition?

Chandra, often called the Moon God, is one of the most luminous figures in the Hindu pantheon. He governs the night sky, controls the tides, and regulates the lunar calendar that structures many religious observances. Mythological Origins and Family Ties

According to the Vedas, Chandra was born from the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya, making him a Rishi offspring. Later Puranic stories describe him as the son of the sage Atri and one of the 27 Rashis (zodiac signs). He is married to the 27 daughters of the sage Daksha, each representing a lunar mansion. This marital network explains the Moon’s monthly progression through the zodiac.

The Tale of the Curse

One famous legend recounts how Chandra favored one wife, Rohini, over the others. Angered, the other wives appealed to the god Shiva, who cursed Chandra to wane in brightness. The curse explains the cyclical phases of the Moon, and later, the god Parvati mitigated the curse, allowing the Moon to regain its full brilliance each month.

Chandra symbolizes the mind’s calm and reflective nature. In Ayurveda, the Moon’s cooling energy balances the fiery qualities of the Sun (Surya).
